What Plastics Cannot Be Laser Cut?

Certain plastics are not suitable for laser cutting due to their composition, potential toxic fumes, and the laser’s interaction with them. Plastics that cannot be laser cut include:

Chlorinated Plastics: Plastics containing chlorine, such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), should not be laser cut. When PVC is subjected to the high temperatures of laser cutting, it releases chlorine gas, which is harmful and corrosive.

Vinyl: Vinyl materials, including vinyl-coated fabrics and certain vinyl films, can emit chlorine gas when exposed to laser cutting.

Fiberglass: Fiberglass-reinforced plastics can release hazardous fumes and particles when laser cut due to the release of glass fibers and resins.

Polypropylene Foam: Expanded polypropylene (EPP) foam is known to melt and create harmful fumes during laser cutting.

Polycarbonate (PC) with Flame Retardants: Polycarbonate materials containing flame retardants can release toxic fumes during laser cutting.

Polyurethane (PU) Foam: Polyurethane foam can emit hazardous fumes when subjected to high heat during laser cutting.

ABS with Styrene: ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) materials containing styrene can produce unpleasant odors and potentially harmful emissions.

Certain Thermoset Plastics: Some thermoset plastics, such as phenolic resins, release hazardous fumes and particles when laser cut.

When working with plastics and laser cutting, it’s essential to choose materials that are known to be safe for laser processing. Always check the material’s specifications and safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer. If in doubt, it’s advisable to conduct tests in a well-ventilated area to assess the compatibility of the plastic with laser cutting and to ensure the safety of both the operator and the environment. Additionally, proper ventilation and exhaust systems are crucial to prevent the release of harmful fumes into the working environment.
